The Government of Lanark County sees high-speed Internet access as a key strategic priority because it provides a mechanism for job creation and economic growth.
The High-speed Internet Project (commonly referred to as Broadband Project) is an ongoing effort to improve Internet access throughout Lanark County such that we can meet the demands of today and tomorrow.
By leveraging provincial and federal funding opportunities as well as working with partners such as the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus (EOWC) we have been able to establish 3 projects that work towards this key strategic priority. As a result, to date, approximateley 95% of Lanark County citizens have access to high-speed Internet.
- Province of Ontario Rural Connections 2007 funded project.
After a rigourous application process, Lanark County was very pleased to receive approval from the Province of Ontario for approximately $230,000 in funding to increase the coverage of high-speed Internet throughout Lanark County.
- Province of Ontario Rural Connections 2009 funded project.
Dovetailing on the success of the 2007 project, another round of funding was available. This time we were approved for approximately $630,000.
- Eastern Ontario Regional Network Project (EORN)
Represented by the Warden’s from several County and Regional governments throughout southeastern Ontario, the Eastern Ontario Warden’s Caucus kicked off the EORN project in 2010. EORN will improve high-speed Internet access for more than one million residents of eastern Ontario. For Lanark County, we will especially benefit from improved satellite Internet services that will help provide access to some of the more difficult areas. Moreover, this project works towards ensuring that the Internet connection speeds in Lanark County will scale to meet our needs in the future.
